What the job involves
Installing an EV charger means running a new circuit from your panel to where you park your car. We check the panel first to see if it can handle the extra load. If it can’t, we upgrade it or add a subpanel. The circuit itself is heavy-duty copper wire, rated for the charger’s draw. We mount the charger on the wall or a post, depending on where you park. Once everything’s hooked up, we test it to make sure it works right.
Why Asheville homes are different
Asheville’s older homes often have panels that weren’t built for today’s electric cars. Many are 100-amp panels, and they’re already loaded up with modern appliances. Even newer homes here aren’t always wired for EVs. We see a lot of panels that need upgrading or subpanels added. The good news is, we’ve done this work in Asheville homes for years. We know how to make it work, no matter the age of your house.
What we check first
When we come out, the first thing we check is your panel. We look at its size, how much load it’s already carrying, and whether it’s in good shape. If it’s too small or overloaded, we’ll need to upgrade it or add a subpanel before we can install the charger. We also look at where you park, because that determines how long the circuit needs to be. Call us to ask what your home needs, and we’ll walk you through it.
Questions about ev charger installation
Will I need a panel upgrade?
It depends on your panel. Many Asheville homes have 100-amp panels, and they’re often already loaded up with modern appliances. If your panel can’t handle the extra load, we’ll need to upgrade it or add a subpanel. We check this first when we come out, so you’ll know right away what your home needs for an EV charger.
What type of wire do you use?
We use heavy-duty copper wire, rated for the draw of your EV charger. The size depends on the charger’s amperage and the length of the run. For most installations, it’s 6-gauge or 4-gauge wire. We also use conduit where needed to protect the wire, especially if it’s running outdoors or through unfinished spaces.
Do you handle permits?
Yes, we handle the permit for you. Installing an EV charger requires a permit and an inspection, which are part of the job. We take care of both, so you don’t have to worry about it. Once the work is done, we make sure it passes inspection before we call it finished.
