How we handle repairs & soak-off
For repairs, we start by assessing the damage—whether it’s a cracked nail, lifting gel, or a broken tip. We’ll carefully file or buff the area, then rebuild it with acrylic or builder gel to match your existing set. For soak-offs, we use acetone wraps or heated soak bowls to dissolve gels without scraping or peeling. We never rush the process, because forcing removal can thin or weaken your natural nails. Afterward, we’ll moisturize and condition your nails to keep them strong.
Why Sonoma nails need special care
Sonoma’s dry climate can make nails brittle, and frequent hand-washing (especially in winery or restaurant work) can weaken gel and acrylic bonds faster. We see more lifting and chipping here than in humid areas, so we pay extra attention to sealing edges and using flexible products that move with your nails. If you’re outdoors a lot, we might recommend a matte topcoat to hide vineyard dust or suggest shorter lengths to prevent snags on grapevines or garden work.
Signs you need a repair or soak-off
If your gel is lifting at the edges or your acrylic has a visible crack, don’t wait—it can trap moisture and lead to fungus. We’ll check for weak spots first, especially near the cuticle where damage is hardest to spot. For soak-offs, come in if your polish is chipping badly or you’ve had the same set for over three weeks. Grown-out nails put stress on the tips, and old product can yellow or thicken. We’ll also look for redness or irritation, though that’s rare with our gentle methods.
Questions about repairs & soak-off
How long does a soak-off take?
A full soak-off usually takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on how many layers of product you have. Thick acrylics or hard gels might need extra time, but we never scrape or peel to speed it up. While you wait, we’ll offer you a drink and can even do a quick hand massage to help the acetone work faster. If you’re also getting a repair, budget about an hour total.
Can I fix a broken nail at home first?
If it’s a small crack, you can use a tea bag or nail glue as a temporary patch, but don’t try to file down lifted gel—you might sand your natural nail. Bring it in as soon as you can, especially if the break is near the nail bed. We’ll clean up any DIY fixes and blend the repair so it’s invisible. For splits that hurt or bleed, skip the salon and see a doctor first.
Will a soak-off ruin my natural nails?
Not if it’s done right. We use pure acetone, not diluted removers, so it works faster with less soaking. Afterward, we hydrate your nails with jojoba oil and a keratin treatment to counteract dryness. If your nails feel thin, we might suggest a strengthening base coat or a week without polish to let them recover. Regular trims and moisturizer at home help too.
